Biography


Chuang Che, born in Beijing in 1934.

Lives and works in New York City since 1973.

Chuang Che is a pioneer of the evolution of Chinese painting to abstraction. Student of CHU Teh Chun from 1954 in Taïwan, he joined in 1958 the Fifth Moon Group, of which he will be one of the main actor. Laureate of the Rockfeller foundation in 1966, he went to New York and then travelled around Europe, meeting ZAO Wou-Ki, CHU Teh-Chun, Antoni Tapiès. These meetings confimed his desire to emancipate from a tradition to better pay hommage to it. From 1973, he isolated in a farm in Michigan. For fourteen years, he created an abstract work, expression of the deep relation to nature. He has explored the possibilities and limits of different materials : ink, acrylic and oil. The artists plays on the transparency or the opacity of these materials to give the impression of the strenghth of natural elements.
