Biography

Loïc Le Groumellec
(1957, Vannes)

The works of Loïc Le Groumellec refer to minimalism, to the monochrome, to a radical form which can lead to the distrust in any sort of story-telling through images, or , even to a complete rejection of the narrative. This idea might make the artist paint the same painting over and over again, yet each time differently.
Three shapes : the megalith, the house and the cross - have been recurrent elements for the artist for thirty years. This work was inspired by the cairn de Gavrinis, a masterpiece of the megalith time, a funerary chamber whose walls are completely covered with motifs, the meaning of which is completely lost nowadays. The latest series “Ecritures”, mazes/labyrinths, uses this memory vocabulary from 4000 BC.
“I’m interested in the confrontation between the belonging to the land and the effort to rise”.
Loïc Le Groumellec pays special attention to the texture and to the surface of his works : from the works with lacquer to the ones with oil or gouache. He recently added the red colour to his series “Ecritures”, created for the École des filles. His works can be found in the biggest private and public collections, also in 2016 they were exhibited in the Musée de l’Hermitage in Lausanne during the exhibition “Basquiat, Dubuffet, Soulages...une collection privée”.
