Matthieu Dorval
Biography
Matthieu Dorval
(born in 1966, Brest)
His birth at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, in 1966, in Brest, deeply affected Matthieu Dorval. Living between the Finistère point and the west of Ireland, Matthieu Dorval explores the shades of blue offered by the horizon; his painting shows the strength of the sea elements. His works, powerful and generous, do not intend to reflect or represent something in particular, but to decipher and penetrate the landscapes down to their very substance and roots, their geological tremors and age-old character.
Matthieu Dorval continues the tradition of abstractinnovations from such artists like Jean Degottex (1916-1988), Cy Twombly (1928) and neo-impressionists like Georg Baselitz (1938), Per Kirkeby (1938) and Miquel Barceló (1957). In the wake of this double lineage, Mathieu Dorval initiates a singular writing in direct relation with nature. The instantaneousness of his gesture, the vividness of his colours, the harmony of his compositions express the immutable poetic force of the natural elements. Great traveller thanks to his origins, his quest of light and co- lour brings him back progressively to the figure of the landscape, in the whole violence of its pattern. A powerful sensitivity that got him noticed by numerous European museums and international art collectors.
The last international project of Matthieu Dorval “Ailleurs est ici”, presented in a container, is a fresco that echos with the text of Marco Polo, the “Book of Marvels of the World”.
