Sergio de Castro
Biography
(1922-2012)
Sergio de Castro was an Argentine artist who played a key role in the development of abstract art in the 20th century. After spending his early years in Switzerland, he returned to Argentina, where he studied art under Joaquín Torres García, a major figure in constructivism. From the 1940s, de Castro moved to Paris, immersing himself in European modern movements and, in particular, drawing influence from Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, ultimately becoming a prominent figure on the Parisian art scene.
He participated in significant international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1980, representing Argentina. During the 1950s and 1960s, he also created monumental works, such as stained glass pieces for churches, including The Creation of the World for the Benedictine Monastery in Caen and The Redemption for the Dietrich
Bonhoeffer Lutheran Church in Hamburg. These creations reflect his interest in merging geometric abstraction with figurative elements, imbuing his works with a spiritual and symbolic dimension.
Sergio de Castro was celebrated for his influence in the art world and was named an Officer of Arts and Letters in 1997. His career, distinguished by his exploration of geometric abstraction, printmaking, and stained glass, solidifies him as an important figure in contemporary art.
