Françoise Giannesini
Biography
An active figure in the «Nouvelle Tapisserie» movement, Françoise Giannesini's highly innovative and personal work since the 1980s has taken her from early woven works
to imposing abstract forms erected in space.
Her work soon gained international renown, and it was in 1991, after two years at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, that her architectural conception of her work took on a new dimension with her slate sculptures set in mortar.
It is in tension, with a mastery that rules out all chance, that the work finds its immobility and strength. Using wool, slate, blue shale and steel, Giannesini reflects on space, movement and light. She supports a different kind of research into the coherence of form and color in sculpture, and the rhythms and resonances of volumes.
