Interview

This Saturday, an exceptional meeting will take place between the curator of the Cernuschi Museum and the artist Hur Kyung-Ae.

What is painting? A body, a skin. From this simple observation, but surprising in its possible extensions, Hur Kyung-Ae has drawn an aesthetic of surface and matter. She paints the canvas with a lot of material and bright colours, then she cuts it into pieces, scratches it, scarifies it, or cuts it into thin vertical strips, rendering any subject illegible, or reduces it to fine pieces of paint detached from the support, which are like the remains of a gigantic scraping of the surface. Sometimes shreds hang and curl like tongues of old tapestry. At other times it feels like a return to dust, like the end of the world.
